Traditional Sash Windows, Casement windows and Wooden Doors in

St James's

and the Surrounding Areas

St James’s, one of London’s most distinguished districts, is known for its elegant Georgian townhouses, classical terraces, and historic landmarks that define refined British architecture. Nestled between Westminster and Mayfair, it is an area where craftsmanship and tradition are part of everyday life. Many properties in St James’s retain their original sash windows, wooden doors, and intricate joinery, each a testament to centuries of fine workmanship. At Traditional Sash Windows and Carpentry, we specialise in restoring, repairing, and crafting bespoke joinery that preserves the character of these exceptional buildings while enhancing energy efficiency, comfort, and longevity.

Our team of experienced craftsmen has worked on period properties across St James’s and surrounding areas such as Piccadilly, Pall Mall, and Westminster. Whether you own a listed Georgian townhouse, a Regency apartment, or a commercial property with traditional features, we provide tailored restoration and joinery services that combine heritage design with modern precision.

Restoring St James’s Historic Sash Windows

Sash windows are one of the defining features of St James’s architecture. Their elegant proportions, fine glazing bars, and balanced frames are integral to the classic London aesthetic. Over time, however, even the finest examples can show signs of age, such as sticking sashes, worn cords, and decayed timber. Our sash window restoration service is designed to restore these windows to perfect working condition while maintaining their original beauty and craftsmanship.

We begin by assessing each window carefully to determine what can be repaired and what requires replacement. Using premium hardwoods such as Accoya and Red Grandis, we repair damaged sections with precision. Each sash is re-corded, balanced, and fitted with fine brush seals to eliminate draughts and ensure effortless movement.

For properties that require enhanced thermal performance, we also offer double-glazed sash replacements and secondary glazing. These options preserve the original façade while providing modern energy efficiency and soundproofing, ideal for listed or high-value properties in central London where both comfort and authenticity are essential.

Bespoke Wooden Doors Crafted for Timeless Elegance

A finely crafted wooden door provides both a warm welcome and a statement of architectural style. Many buildings in St James’s feature grand Georgian panelled doors, often painted in bold colours and adorned with brass fittings. At Traditional Sash Windows and Carpentry, we design and create bespoke wooden doors that reflect these period details while offering the security and reliability expected in modern homes and businesses.

Each door is handmade in our Kent workshop using traditional mortise and tenon joinery to ensure strength and longevity. We craft Georgian six-panel doors, Victorian glazed designs, and bespoke styles for commercial properties that require elegance and durability. Every door is finished with high-quality locks, hinges, and weather-resistant coatings that protect against moisture and fading while maintaining a flawless appearance.

We also provide door restoration services, repairing original entrances, refinishing surfaces, and upgrading fittings while maintaining historic detail. Whether restoring a grand townhouse entrance on Jermyn Street or installing new French doors leading onto a terrace, we deliver workmanship that blends period authenticity with lasting performance.

Draught Proofing and Improved Energy Efficiency

Many period properties in St James’s were built long before modern insulation standards, meaning that heat can easily escape through original windows and doors. Our draught proofing service provides a discreet and effective solution, improving comfort and reducing energy costs without altering the property’s appearance.

We fit fine brush seals into the frames of sash windows and doors to block draughts, prevent rattling, and improve insulation. This service is especially beneficial in listed or heritage buildings where external alterations are restricted. When combined with secondary glazing, it offers excellent thermal performance and sound reduction, making homes and offices warmer, quieter, and more energy efficient.

These subtle improvements make a visible difference in comfort while preserving the architectural integrity of every property we work on.

Traditional Craftsmanship with Modern Reliability

At Traditional Sash Windows and Carpentry, we combine traditional joinery techniques with modern materials and precision tools. Every item we produce is made by hand by skilled craftsmen who understand how to maintain authenticity while improving performance.

We use sustainable hardwoods such as Accoya and Red Grandis, chosen for their dimensional stability, durability, and resistance to decay. Each piece is finished with breathable coatings that protect against moisture while allowing the wood to age gracefully. The result is joinery that remains beautiful and functional for generations.

Our commitment to craftsmanship and quality ensures that every sash window, wooden door, and piece of bespoke joinery we create meets the highest standards of both appearance and performance.

Joinery Services Across St James’s and Central London

We offer our full range of joinery and restoration services across St James’s and nearby areas including Piccadilly, Westminster, Mayfair, and Belgravia. Our team works on listed and conservation-area properties, commercial premises, and private residences, providing restoration and bespoke joinery that respect the area’s architectural heritage. We replicate original details such as mouldings, profiles, and glazing bar patterns to ensure that every element looks authentic and consistent with the property’s design.

As a family-run company, we pride ourselves on trust, clear communication, and exceptional workmanship. From consultation to completion, our approach is professional, transparent, and focused on delivering long-term value.

Sustainability and Responsible Materials

Sustainability is central to our work. We aim to repair wherever possible, preserving original timber and minimising waste. When new joinery is required, we use responsibly sourced timber and eco-friendly finishes that enhance both durability and environmental responsibility.

Accoya, one of our preferred timbers, is recognised for its sustainability and exceptional lifespan of up to 50 years above ground. Its resistance to decay, warping, and moisture makes it ideal for London’s variable climate, ensuring that every installation remains strong and stable for decades.

By combining traditional craftsmanship with sustainable innovation, we create joinery that protects both your home and the environment.

FAQ

What services do Traditional Sash Windows and Carpentry provide?

keyboard_arrow_down

We repair, restore and replace traditional timber windows and doors across Kent and London. Our work includes sash window overhauls and draught proofing, timber resin repairs, replacement sashes, new box sash windows, casement window repairs, secondary glazing, double glazed sash windows, wooden door repairs, replacement doors and bespoke joinery.

Do you repair original sash windows or only replace them?

keyboard_arrow_down

Where possible, we always aim to repair and retain original timber windows. Many older sash windows can be brought back into good working order with careful timber repairs, replacement sections, new cords, pulleys, beads, glazing repairs and draught proofing. Full replacement is usually recommended only where the existing frame or sashes are beyond economical repair, or where a customer would benefit more from entirely new joinery.

Can you make sash windows warmer without changing their appearance?

keyboard_arrow_down

Yes. Our sash window overhaul and draught proofing service is designed to reduce rattling, draughts and heat loss while preserving the character of traditional windows. We can also discuss slimline double glazing, standard double glazing where suitable, secondary glazing and Fineo vacuum glazing, depending on the building, existing joinery and planning requirements.

Do you work on listed buildings and conservation properties?

keyboard_arrow_down

Yes. We regularly work on period homes, listed buildings and properties within conservation areas. Our approach focuses on retaining as much original timber and architectural detail as possible, using traditional joinery methods alongside modern repair materials where appropriate. We can produce like for like replacement components, including mouldings, glazing bars, curved heads and bespoke sash profiles.

What timber do you use for replacement windows and doors?

keyboard_arrow_down

The right timber depends on the property, design and budget. We commonly use Accoya, Sapele and European Oak, along with other suitable hardwoods and softwoods where required. Accoya is a popular choice for painted external joinery because it is highly stable and durable, while Sapele and Oak can be well suited to particular repairs, doors and specialist joinery details.

Do you provide painting and decorating after the repairs?

keyboard_arrow_down

Our repairs and new joinery are supplied properly prepared and undercoated where required, ready for final decoration. We do not generally provide the final painting service, as this is best completed by a dedicated decorator once the timber has fully settled and any surrounding finishes have been prepared. We will always explain what stage the joinery will be left at before work begins.

Do you offer free surveys and quotations?

keyboard_arrow_down

We offer surveys and quotations for suitable projects across Kent and London. During the visit, we assess the condition of the windows, doors or joinery, discuss the options available and explain the likely repair or replacement work involved. For some smaller jobs, clear photographs and measurements may be enough for us to provide an initial estimate before arranging a site visit.

How long does sash window repair work take?

keyboard_arrow_down

This depends on the number of windows, their condition and the level of repair needed. A straightforward overhaul and draught proofing job can often be completed in a day, while larger restoration projects, replacement sashes or full house installations may take longer. We will provide a clear programme before work starts so you know what to expect.

Are you fully insured and certified?

keyboard_arrow_down

Yes. Traditional Sash Windows and Carpentry is fully insured and CERTASS certified, giving customers added confidence that their project is being completed by an experienced and properly accredited team. CERTASS certification allows us to self certify qualifying replacement window and door installations, helping ensure the work meets current Building Regulations requirements without the need for the customer to arrange separate Building Control approval. Once the installation is complete, the relevant certification can be provided for applicable work.We also hold appropriate public liability insurance for the work we carry out, including sash window repairs, replacement timber windows, wooden doors, glazing and bespoke joinery.

Do you install secondary glazing for sash windows?

keyboard_arrow_down

Yes. We supply and fit bespoke secondary glazing for sash windows, casement windows and other traditional timber windows throughout Kent and London. It is a practical way to improve warmth, reduce outside noise and limit draughts without removing or altering the original joinery.Secondary glazing is fitted internally, creating an additional barrier behind the existing window. This makes it especially useful for period homes, listed buildings and conservation areas where replacing original windows may not be appropriate. We can advise on discreet systems that suit the style, layout and day to day use of your windows, including horizontal sliding, vertical sliding, hinged and fixed options where suitable.

Which areas do you cover?

keyboard_arrow_down

Traditional Sash Windows and Carpentry works throughout the whole of Kent and London, including Ramsgate, Broadstairs, Margate, Canterbury, Whitstable, Herne Bay, Deal, Sandwich, Dover, Folkestone, Maidstone, Tonbridge and surrounding areas. We also take on selected projects further afield where the scope of work is suitable.
